Commitment and technique

A recent post by Seth Godin talks about how we often waste time teaching people things they’re not really committed to learning.

His solution is to teach commitment first. Because then people will stick to what they are learning.

My approach, and the approach of the book I am currently writing, is slightly different.

To me if there’s a commitment problem then it’s because people are bored. And if they’re bored it’s because the things they are learning are not really engaging them. And although it is possible to say “Commit! Even though you hate it”, a better solution is surely to enable people to find out what really motivates them, what they love, who they are.

Because if they know that, and have chosen something that fits with it, then commitment won’t be an issue.
